Event Details

Imagine the Matthew Shepard story told through more than just human eyes with the masterful poetry of Lesléa Newman’s book October Mourning, brought to life by a stunning score from local Long Beach composer Curtis Heard. Six Long Beach based arts organizations will combine to present October Mourning: A Song for Matthew Shepard at the Beverly O’Neill Theatre on Saturday, November 18 at 7:30pm. This large-scale performance combines the worlds of choir and theater.

Join the South Coast Chorale (the LGBTQ Chorus of Long Beach), in collaboration with the First Congregational Church Sanctuary Choir & Handbells, Landmark Theatre Company, Musique Sur La Mer Chamber Orchestra, Long Beach Youth Chorus, and members of the Wilson High School Choir as we share the unheard voices of the fence, the deer, the stars, and more in this musical narrative of a story that, 25 years later, resonates far beyond the LGBTQ community.

The concert will also include narration by Griselda Suarez (Arts Council for Long Beach) and Sunshine Daye (LB Spiritual Leader & Speaker).

A pre-concert discussion with community leaders will begin at 6pm, moderated by Justin Rudd.

Tickets $25-65

Premium seating includes a copy of the October Mourning book.
